I・O・N (イ・オ・ン) is a one-volume, magical girl-based shojo manga released by Tanemura Arina. It debuted in the May 1997 issue of Ribon magazine, and ran until November 1997.

I・O・N is the first manga series written by Tanemura Arina. The series was only intended to be three chapters long, but Ribon publishers asked her to extend it to six chapters. The manga has been liscenced by Viz Media in the USA and is set for an April release, under their Shojo Beat line.

Synopsis

Tsubaragi Ion is a normal high school girl. Her dream is to fall in love with a boy who pursues his dream. When she was a little girl, her father taught her a spell; which is, if she slowly chants her name good things will happen.

The student council president, Shirashi Koki, has a crush on Ion, but his feelings aren't returned. Ion ends up falling for Horai Mikado, the presdient of psychic research club, because he is going after his dream. After an encounter with Horai's mysterious substance, Tsubaragi's untapped powers grow stronger. Horai then becomes infatuated with her, but he doesn't know if it's admiration for her ablities or love for her as a girl.

Characters

Main Characters

  • Tsubaragi Ion (粒依音): The main character of the manga. Her father died when she was young, but before he died, he taught her a spell. He told her whenever she was in trouble to slowly chant her name and good things will happen. She longed to meet a boy who is following his dream, and then fall in love with him. Tanemura Arina said that she got her name from the scientific term ion. While her last name Tsubaragi comes from the Japanese kanji for particles.
  • Horai Mikado (宝来帝): He is the president of the psychic research club. His dream is to obtain psychic powers so he could be like Psychic Man and help people.
  • Shirashi Koki (白石広貴): He is the president of the student council. He is well-liked by the school's female population, but only has an interest in Ion.
  • Tagosaku (田吾作): He is Shirashi Koki's assistant, whom he seems to be in love with. He originally dislikes Ion because of how Koki feels for her, but after she saves his life, they become friends.
  • Minase Ai (水瀬藍): She is a Mikado's ex-girlfriend. They started dating in middle school because Mikado addmired her psychic powers, but later broke up because he realized her liked her for that reason only. They went to different high school's until she transfers to Mikado's school in chapter three.

Supporting Characters

  • Kyono (清乃): She is one of Ion's best friends. She is very outspoken.
  • Minami (愛美): She is one of Ion's best friends. She is always shown to be crying.
  • Todaiji Subaru (東大寺昴): He is Horai Mikado's best friend. He's known him since middle school and is the vice princpal of the psychic research club.
  • Saido (さいどう): He is a friend of Horai Mikado and a member of the psychic research club.
  • Minamibe (みなみべ): He is a friend of Horai Mikado and a member of the psychic research club.
  • Tsubaragi Yuki (粒依由貴): He is Ion's father. He was the scientist who created the substance that had psychic ablities. He died at the age of 25.
  • Ms. Tsubaragi: She is Ion's mother. She gave birth to Ion when she was only 16 years old. She is very hard working and tries to fill both roles of mother and father for her daughter.
  • Psychic Man: He is a super hero from a children's TV series. Mikado idolizes him because he uses his powers to save people.
