f(x) was announced as a new girl group by SM on August 2009. On the name of the group, SM has stated: ''The 'x' in f(x) is a variable, and if it changes, the result will be different. The 'f' stands for 'flower', and the 'x' stands for the female chromosome 'xx'. And like a flower, they will blossom and become hot icons to represent Asia as the top "Asian Pop Dance Group."''. One of the considered names for f(x) was WHITE ANGELS. The group has been mistakenly called as the "female SHINee" by some netizens, when that title was given (by SM) to another five-person girl group called CRYSTAL, which will debut soon.
