"Tsumi to Batsu" is Shiina Ringo's seventh single. It was released at the same time as her other fifth-equal single, "Gips". The B-side "Kimi no Hitomi ni Koi Shiteru" is a cover of Frankie Valli's 1967 song "Can't Take My Eyes Off Youz'. "Tsumi to Batsu" reached #4 in Oricon charts (one place below "Gips") and charted for 11 weeks. It sold 545,730 units in Japan, reaching #38 on the end-of-year charts for 2000.
The single has an internal symmetry it shares with Gips: the single starts with a three kana song, then is followed by a cover song, then ends with a song sung in English. Similarly, a song on each single also features a famous guest artist (Asai Kenichi of BLANKEY JET CITY is featured in "Tsumi to Batsu" , while on "Gips"' Sigma Tabuchi Hisako of Number Girl and moOog of Buffalo Daughter are featured).
The promotional photos and music video for the single feature a mustard-coloured, second-hand Mercedes-Benz. It was bought by Shiina, who nicknamed the car "Hitler". After half a year since buying the car, Shiina was plagued with break-downs and the car constantly running out of gas. When Shiina was on the verge of dumping the car, her staff got word of this and thought that the car could be used for promotional uses. The car was also featured in Shiina's Izonshou music video (appearing on her Seiteki Healing ~Vol. II~ PV clip collection), where, at the foot of Mt. Fuji, it was destroyed in an explosion.

Music Video
The PV for "Tsumi to Batsu" was directed by Kimura Yutaka. Some scenes feature Shiina sitting in the Mercedes with a red leather jacket, red leather gloves and red leather pants on. However, others show Shiina standing against a red wall welding a katana (with the same attire). Later on in the music video, the camera turns; revealing that it is not a car that Shiina is sitting in; but instead a car cut in half.
