Information

In 2007, five YG trainees (Kim Ji Eun, Park Bom, Gong Minji, May Doni and Lee Chaeri) were supposed to debut, but not together. Out of these, only Kim Ji Eun debuted. In 2008, YG revealed that a new "female Big Bang" was supposed to debut soon. He said he wanted the audience to imagine the group as a female version of Big Bang. After the addition of Sandara Park to the group, there were plans of debuting them as a 5-person entity. Those plans were disregarded later, and it was announced that the group would debut with four girls: Sandara Park, Park Bom, CL and Gong Minji.

The name of the group was still undecided, but it was announced on March 2009 that they would appear with Big Bang on a CF endorsing an unknown product. The filming of the CF took place on March 18 2009. A few days later it was revealed that the product was LG Electronics "CYON" (Lollipop, model name: LG-SV800, KH8000, LH8000), and that the digital single "Lollipop" would be released in various online music sites. The CF was released on the CYON site on March 28 2009, and it started airing on TV on April. The MV of the song was released on April 3 2009 on the CYON site.

Meanwhile, on the same day of the CF's release, it was announced that the group would be named "21", because their music would be fresh like the age 21. It was also made known that the name could be pronounced as "to anyone". However YG Ent was later notified about a ballad singer named "21(To Anyone)". YG released an announcement, stating that they knew that there was not an artist named 21, but they weren't aware of a singer named "To Anyone", and that the official name for the "female Big Bang" would be 2NE1. According to YG, '2NE1s NE is the abbreviation for 'New evolution'. Therefore, 2NE1 means a new evolution in the 21st century'. Hence, the group went from 21 (To Anyone) to 21 (2NE1). The "to anyone" part was changed to avoid confusion with 21(To Anyone).

On April 30 2009, details about 2NE1's debut were announced. A few days before, YG revealed that the concern about the group's debut was huge, and bigger than when Big Bang debuted. The group's debut song would be Fire, and would be released as digital single. Their debut stage would air on SBS Inkigayo on May 17 2009. A 20 seconds video teaser was released in 2NE1's homepage, and it was viewed 200,000 times after a day it was released. Until May 5 2009, various teasers were released, sparking interest in the group. 15,000 people joined the group's official Korean fan café during that span of time.

On May 6 2009, the song was digitally released on all online music sites, as well as the MV, in GomTV. Less than a day after the release of the MV on GomTV, it hit one million views.

The group's debut stage on Inkigayo was filmed on May 15 2009. It lasted 6 minutes, including an introduction video as well as the performance itself. Three new sets made for the introduction video, an equipment called the body mount cameras, never used before in a broadcast programmes. The introduction video featured solo dances of each of the members.

In an interview with Star News, CL said, "We are very nervous because it is our debut stage, but we had more than 1000 fans today supporting us who has been a strong support and we finished our rehersal with enjoyment." Lead vocal, Park Bom also said "Our rehearsal stage felt like a concert stage thanks to our fans support (laughs). Also, the other vocal Sandara Park, was smiling as she said "This debut stage is like a dream". The team's youngest Gong Minji also said "I am very thankful to all the people who took interest in our debut stage". They also confessed that their seniors Big Bang's support gave them a lot of strength. Also this day, Big Bang's G-Dragon and Daesung were present at the debut to support. Park Bom said, "Big Bang members gave us advice on how to look at the camera and also on body movements and also gave us a lot of strength". She also added "The members have been practising every hour, expect for the sleeping hour and we tried hard, and will also show our good side to fans". YG was present in the filming of 2NE1's debut stage. The music program Inkigayo on which 2NE1's debut stage was broadcasted achieved a rating of 16%, and during the specific time of 2NE1's stage, the rating reached 14.9%.

On May 19 2009 YG revealed that 2NE1's broadcasted activities would be controlled. The focus would be performances, maybe in small number (ie. appearing in one music program per week), but the group would work a lot on them, hoping to deliver good performances.

On May 21 2009 2NE1 was featured in PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal).
