Featured Article Ikimonogakari promoting Asobi (2025) Ikimonogakari Ikimonogakari (いきものがかり) is a pop-rock duo consisting of Mizuno Yoshiki and Yoshioka Kiyoe. They were founded in 1999 in Kanagawa, Japan by Mizuno Yoshiki and Yamashita Hotaka, who had known each other since they were six years old. The two began doing street performances and decided on their name of "Ikimonogakari," a reference to a group of children who are responsible for looking after plants and animals in Japanese elementary schools. In December of the same year, Yoshioka Kiyoe joined as the group's main vocalist. However, nearly one year later the three disbanded in order for Mizuno and Yamashita to focus on their university entrance exams. Their reformation occurred in March 2002 after the two had gone through their university classes. The group made their major debut in March 2006 under EPIC Records Japan. Since then, several of their albums have reached #1 on the Oricon weekly rankings. Many of their songs have been featured on various media: from TV commercials, anime shows such as Naruto Shippuden, TV dramas such as Onna wa Sore wo Yurusanai, live action movies such as Eiga Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo, the 2012 Olympic broadcast theme song for NHK, and the set piece for a national junior high music competition. Mizuno has the most composed songs among them, while Yamashita ranks second. Yoshioka has contributed lyrics to a few songs, but "Namida ga Kieru Nara" is the only song on which the three of them have collaborated. In June 2021, it was announced that Yamashita Hotaka was leaving the band which would continue as a duo. Their eleventh album, Asobi, is released this week on April 30th.
