Banggwahu Seollem
Deunggyojeon Mangseolim
Banggwahu Seollem (방과후 설렘; Excitement After School), also known in English as My Teenage Girl, is a Korean pop survival competition on MBC. The show features the theme of an after school club, and contestants are divided into four different grades based on age. It has the aim of debuting a global girl group that will chart on the Billboard charts.
A prequel season titled Deunggyojeon Mangseolim (등교전 망설임; Hesitation Before Going to School) aired on Naver Now starting September 14, 2021 which was hosted by Lee Eunji (as the "older sister") and Oh Eunyoung (as the "mother").
During their performance, contestants ("students") must reach at least a 75% rating from the voting audience in order to pass. Once passed, they then must receive at least 3 out of 4 votes from the four judges to continue on. Originally, only 10 students from each grade would be able to move on to the next mission. However, because the juniors had six over the allotted number of passed students, the homeroom teachers decided to even the playing field by bringing back previously eliminated contestants who they feel have potential.
Despite 16 students from each grade moving on to the next mission, only 10 are able to perform during the mission as per the entrance examination. Thus, during the mid-point check for the next mission, students were eliminated based on their skills at that time.
This mission is formatted in a tournament style. Each grade goes up against another grade at a "midterm exam", which is comprised of a group battle and 1v1 ace battle. The scores of each are combined with the higher score winning the battle. The winners then face each other at the "final exam", which is a concept battle.
The winning teams from the midterm combine to perform together to determine 1st and 2nd place, and the losing teams will also combine and will fight for 3rd and 4th place. The contestants are still judged by their grades even though they are in the same performance, and they battle to determine which grade will receive the killing parts in each performance. The three concepts that the contestants get to choose from are "Pretty", "Powerful", and "Talented".
The winners are determined by on-site audience votes. All students in the winning team survive to the next mission, and one student from each of the losing teams is eliminated, both during the midterm exam and the final exam. The winning team also scores a spot for their grade on the debut team.
