Yamazaki Mei auditioned to become a Ciaogirl, a model for Ciao magazine, sometime in 2014. The next year she participated in the "Hello! Project "Hokkaido Gentei" Member Audition", and on June 30, 2019 was officially introduced as a member of Hello Pro Kenshuusei Hokkaido during the "Hello! Project 2016 Summer ~Sunshine Parade~" concert in Sapporo, alongside Oota Haruka, Satou Hikari, Ishiguri Kanami, Kawano Minori, Kitagawa Ryou, and Kudou Yume.
On May 6, 2018 at the "Hello! Project Kenshuusei Happyoukai 2018 ~Haru no Koukai Jitsuryoku Shindan Test~" event Mei recieved the Judges singing award for her performance of Juice=Juice's "Wonderful World (English Ver.)". The following year on May 4, 2019 at the "Hello! Project Kenshuusei Happyoukai 2019 ~Haru no Koukai Jitsuryoku Shindan Test~" event Mei was awarded the Judges character award for a performance of °C-ute's "Mugen Climax".
