Mi

Mi (pronounced M.I. [em-eye]) was a Japanese pop/rock all-girl group on the Columbia label. Their name comes from "I Love Music", taking the "I" and "M" and reversing them. It can also be seen as an abbreviation of the lead singer Maika's name.

Information

Mi was formed in spring 2003 from an audition of 3000 looking for the most beautiful voice. Sixteen-year-old Maika was chosen, with a unanimous decision that she would be the next hit artist. Maika refused to be a soloist though; she went out and found two college students, Yuri and Aya. Each girl was highly talented, as Aya played piano and wrote lyrics, and Yuri could play several instruments.

In 2005 they released their first single, "Mirai no Chizu", and it rose as high as #3 on the Oricon. It was also made the sixth theme song for the variety show Ainori. While V6 recorded the past five themes, with all hitting #1 on the Oricon, it was the first time in music history that a girl group made it to the top 3 with their first appearance. Audiences also loved the song because it was different from the previous themes.

Their second single, "Orange Iro no Kokoro" was used as the backing music for Sugo Melo commercials. The third single was used in a variety of NTV programming.

In February 2006 the band began releasing cover songs on a monthly basis, which ended late January 2007. Among these covers are Ima Sugu Kiss Me (by Lindberg) and Give Me Up (BaBe). However, the majority of these were made for Internet buy and download only.

On November 16th, 2007, it was announced that Mi would be disbanding due to the bassist Yuri's retirement.
