THE CHANGING SAME is Hirai Ken's third and last studio album with Sony Records. "The Changing Same –Kawari Yuku Kawaranai Mono–" was used as lead track. For unknown reason, his only 1997 release single, "HEAT UP", wasn't included in the album tracklist. It was released on the same day as Ken Hirai Films Vol.2.

The original edition reached #1 on Oricon charts and charted for eighteen weeks, while the re-released reached #44 and stayed on the charts for four weeks. As the original edition sold 912,800 copies in 2000, it was the 18th best-selling album of that year. In the end, it sold approximately 1,265,000 copies.

The album was certified Million by RIAJ.
