Megamasso (メガマソ) is a three-piece Japanese rock band in the visual-kei scene. Ryohei, the former guitarist and leader of Ayabie, formed the group in Tokyo some time after his departure from the band in August of 2006. Remaining under NXSIE RECORDS during their indies career, the band signed with the major label avex trax during the summer of 2009. They have a fun-filled experimental sound mixing together punk, piano ballads, synths, and upbeat pop-rock songs.
Megamasso was formed sometime after August 30th, 2006 and before December of 2006. It was put together by Ryohei, the former guitarist and leader of Ayabie. The band members also contained newcomer vocalist INZARGI, former Dari bassist Gou, and former Ayabie rodie Yuta. They also had Leo, who was their live support guitarist. For the band's name, Ryohei had wanted a four syllable name since he was in his first band. But in Japanese characters as he didn't care how it was romanized in English. He had chosen メガマソ because the syllables "me ga ma so" sounded beautiful to him.
The band's very first release was the mini-album Namida Neko. It was first released on December 6th through Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka's Like an Edisons shops. One week later (the 13th) was when the mini-album became available to purchase nationally. It since reached #100 on the major Oricon chart, where it charted for two weeks.
Their first live was played at Shibuya O-EAST on December 16th. They had played twice at the same venue on the same day, calling the lives "DAYLIGHT" and "LIMELIGHT" respectively. At each live, attendees were given the single "New Romancer (Shinkeikei Ajinsei)". The two different covers determind what time the live was at. One of those lives were filmed and released later as the DVD "Mega-star Tokyo" on February 21st, 2007.
2006 ended with Megamasso performing at the "stylish wave COUNTDOWN '06-'07" at Yokohama Akarenga Souko on December 31st. And 2007 started with a fanclub only live at Harajuku ASTRO HALL on January 4th. Megamasso's fanclub was called Mega-star's prayer.
Their first project live, titled "~Denpa Taisen~" was held at Shinjuku LOFT on January 14th. They then became a part of Guy's Family's first sponsored live party. It was called "Guy's Party", and was at LIQUID ROOM ebisu on the 20th. January ended with the release of their second mini-album Kai no Me Tou no Zokuryou. Which was released on the 24th, it has reached #8 on the indies Oricon chart, and #129 on the major Oricon chart where it charted for a week.
February began with another Megamasso project, this time at Daikanyama UNIT on the 5th. It was with Vidoll and was titled "Twin Clown Machinery". The band then had their second fanclub only live called "Megamasso to Issho" at Yokohama BLITZ on the 14th. A three date mini-tour, "Shingest no Mizutamari -Zenshousen Sanhon Shoubu!-", led into March. Starting at Motoyawata ROUTE14 on the 26th and ended at Urawa Narciss on March 6th.
The band's first tour, "LIVE-TOUR 2007 ~Shingetsu no Mizutamari~", started at Sapporo BESSIE HALL on the 9th and ended at Zepp Tokyo ono the 24th. This tour hit seven stops on the way. During the tour on the 21st was the release of their first full-length album Yuki Shitatari Hoshi. That reached #5 on the indies Oricon chart, and #148 on the major Oricon chart where it charted for a week. The last date on the tour was an important one. It was filmed and was later released as a part of the DVD "lunch box M4". The single "Viper" was given out to all attendees, and their live support guitarist Leo left the band. He later went on to be a part of Watashime Slug, and when that disbanded he later joined NaiL.
April and May had few lives, the former had two while the latter had three. Megamasso were only participants during these company sponsored events. April 6th at Takadanobaba AREA for "Visunavi Presents Mix Candies Vol.5 ~Haru no Sakura Ame~", April 17th at Shibuya O-WEST for "Rk presents29 40th minutes battle!!", May 1st at Shibuya O-EAST for "NEO SIGHT '07 SPECIAL", May 3rd at Shibuya O-WEST for "Fool's Fest 07 ~STAGE.1~", and May 15th at Shibuya O-EAST for "h'evn no Omatsuri Tenmade Tobou!!".
June 6th was the start of a three month consecutive release plan with their first single "Hoshi Furi Machi nite". The single reached #3 on the indies Oricon chart, and #87 on the major Oricon chart where it charted for two weeks. Three days later (the 9th), Yuta decided to permanently leave the band because of the differences in the way he personally wanted the band to go in. Megamasso wouldn't get another drummer so instead they use recording and live support drummers. The rest of June was two lives, both at Shibuya O-EAST during the 20th and the 24th ("ROCK GARAGE!!" and "J SHOCK REVOLUTION Vol.1" respectively).
July 18th was the second part of the consecutve release campaign, their second DVD "lunch box M4". It is a combination of a PV collection and a live DVD. A live at Takadanobaba AREA, part of "Shock Edge the Live!", on October 8th preluded the release of Matataku Yoru, their second full-length album in the same year. This album reached #4 on the indies Oricon chart, and #78 on the major Oricon chart where it charted for a week. Before their winter tour. The tour final held at Shibua-AX was filmed and later released as the DVD "Shibuya Under the Snow ~Fuyu Kakeru Ganka~" on March 5th, 2008. It was also around this time that Megamasso formed their alter-band Megamachu (メガマチュ). This band is almost the same as Megamasso, but instead they all wear mice costumes and added chuu (チュー) at the ends of their names.
Megamachu was formed for CS Fuji Television 721's show "Sora Tobu! Baku Chuu Mondai". They had their live 'debut' at the show's 2007 Christmas episode. They also had a single, "Kiss Me Chu Chu", released on February 20th, 2008. The title song was used as the aforementioned TV show's theme song.
