In 1999 the avex label organized a huge talent contest, called "avex dream 2000", with the aim of finding the right girls for a new group. The result was dream, a three-piece group consisting of Matsumuro Mai, Tachibana Kana and Hasebe Yu.

On June 27th, 2007, dream was "reborn" as the dance/chorus group DRM in an attempt to shed their image as idols.

Biography

The group debuted on January 1, 2000, with the single Movin' on, which made it into the Oricon top 15 with a mature image and non-cheesy eurobeats. Their next few singles all charted in similar territory, failing to break the top 10 until their sixth single, My Will, made it to #6 at the end of 2000. Ironically, the group's next single would be their worst-charting to date, peaking at #36.

Things were considered more or less over for the group when Mai, who wrote most of their lyrics, decided to leave in 2002. avex held more auditions for a replacement, but ended up with 6 new girls, which many saw as an attempt to emulate the success of top girl-group Morning Musume. The new 8-girl group "re-debuted" in 2003 with MUSIC IS MY THING. Roughly one year later, Ai Risa would leave to pursue a solo career, bringing the group's member count down to 7.

As a 7-member group, dream primarily released cover albums (covering songs by 3-member dream, and other avex artists), until the mini-album was settled on their standard medium for releasing new material. This latter trend would continue through June 2007, when the group again "re-debuted" -- this time as DRM, with a mini-album of the same name.

Since 2005, the girls' activities have seemed to involve as much sports as music. Their former group name is the namesake of TEAM dream, a futsal team often in competition with Gatas Brilhantes H.P., and DRM's full roster helps populate the team's ranks, with key members playing prominent positions.
