Jung was born on April 18, 1989 in San Francisco, California. She was scouted by SM Entertainment while she was shopping with her parents in a Lotte Department Store in 2000. She moved to South Korea for training, enrolled in the Korea Kent Foreign School, and trained for seven years and six months before debuting in Girls' Generation; she graduated from "Korea Kent Foreign School" on November 4, 2007. Besides being featured and participating in soundtracks, she made her acting debut in the South Korean stage production of the American musical Legally Blonde (The Musical) as the main character "Elle Woods".
