"Butter" is a digital single released by BTS. It's their second song performed in English, with Dynamite being the first. It was first released as a digital single, with a physical edition released later on June 9th. The physical single was released in two versions, 'Cream' and 'Peaches', with the difference between the two resting on the contents of the package; if bought through their platform weverse, it would come with an additional postcard for each version. The B-side of the physical release, "Permission to Dance", was co-composed by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran.
The song was downloaded 27,772 times on its first day of release in Japan. This marks their largest digital sales in a debut day. It also set a new record for the biggest debut on Spotify, with 11.042 million first-day streams.
The first remix of the song, "Butter (Hotter Remix)", was released on May 28th as a second digital single. It was accompanied by a new music video.
The song reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts. It became the song with the largest sales week, surpassing their previous record set with "Dynamite".
On June 4th, another two remixes, Sweeter Remix and Cooler Remix, were released as a celebration for reaching Number 1 on the Billboad Hot 100 charts.
Since June 15th, it was used as theme song for their variety program Run BTS!.
On August 27th, a collab version was released as a new digital single, featuring the Grammy-winner rapper Megan Thee Stallion.
The music video for "Butter" was released on May 21st, with a teaser previously released on May 19th. It achieved an all-time record for the biggest music video première on YouTube, as well as most views withing its 24 first hours. It surpassed the previously record set by their single "Dynamite".
On May 28th, they released another music video for their first remix of the song, "Hotter Remix". The music video was shot with a still camera. It usually had one member focused with the rest of the band in the back but out of focus.
A 'special performance video' was released on May 30th. It features the original version of the song. It was filmed fully inside a building, showing the full choreography of the song.
On June 5th, a third official music video was released, this time for their remixed version of the song, 'Cooler Remix'. It features BTS performing the full song on the gym set used on their first video.
