Sakurai Rio participated in the "ANGERME ONLY ONE Audition ~Watashi wo Tsukuru no wa Watashi~" in 2020 but failed to pass. She then auditioned for the "Hello! Project "Morning Musume '22" "Juice=Juice" Goudou Shin Member Audition", and on June 29, 2022, she was announced to have passed the final round, becoming a member of Morning Musume. On November 17th, she celebrated her 17th birthday with the event "Morning Musume '22 Sakurai Rio Birthday Event".
