DEF.DIVA

Members: Abe Natsumi, Goto Maki, Ishikawa Rika, Matsuura Aya

Formed in late 2005, DEF.DIVA's debut single, "Suki Sugite Baka Mitai", reached #1 on the Oricon charts and for a time, held the record for the lowest sales needed to reach the top spot.

GAM

Members: Matsuura Aya, Fujimoto Miki

This duo was formed with their debut single, "Thanks!", as the theme song for the film Sukeban Deka Code Name = Asamiya Saki starring Matsuura as the title character.

Morning Musume Tanjou 10nen Kinentai

Members: Iida Kaori, Abe Natsumi, Goto Maki, Niigaki Risa, Kusumi Koharu

This unit was formed to celebrate Morning Musume's tenth anniversary, and released two singles and one live DVD.

High-King

Members: Takahashi Ai, Tanaka Reina, Shimizu Saki, Yajima Maimi, Maeda Yuuka

High-King was formed to promote Cinderella The Musical starring Morning Musume. Their debut single, "C\C (Cinderella\Complex)", was used as the play's theme song. High-King made a return in 2009 as one of the seven "Champloo units" formed for a cover album, singing "DIAMONDS", as well as recording another original song, "DESTINY LOVE", for the end-of-the-year album Petit Best 10.

Zoku v-u-den

Members: Michishige Sayumi, Junjun, Sugaya Risako

Ex-ceed!

Members: Kusumi Koharu, Junjun, Linlin, Natsuyaki Miyabi

This group was specifically created to perform at the Expo 2010. Junjun and Linlin, as representatives of the Expo's location and their home country, personally chose Kusumi and Natsuyaki to perform with them, due to the latter two having expressed their wishes to visit China.

Shuffle Units

Main article: Hello! Project Shuffle Units

A yearly challenge from 2000 to 2005, all members of Hello! Project would be "shuffled" into three different groups, who would each release one single to see which one will outsell the others.

Promotional Units

These groups were formed mainly to promote a tie-in, whether it be a commercial or an anime.

Tsukishima Kirari starring Kusumi Koharu

Morning Musume's Kusumi Koharu was the seiyuu for Tsukishima Kirari, the main character of Kirarin Revolution, an anime which ran from 2006 to 2009.

Shugo Chara Egg!

Members: 2008–2009: Maeda Yuuka, Wada Ayaka, Saho Akari, Fukuda Kanon; 2009–2010: Fukumura Mizuki, Tanabe Nanami, Saho Akari, Maeda Irori

For the anime Shugo Chara!! Doki and its subsequent series, Shugo Chara Party!, Shugo Chara Egg! was formed to sing the opening theme songs. The four members represented the four transformations of the main character, Hinamori Amu.
