The song originally had lyrics written by a different songwriter. Hamasaki was dissatisfied with the lyrics, and producer Max Matsuura suggested she write new lyrics herself. The lyrics were written the morning the single was recorded. "I'm sure at the time I was extraordinarily lonely," Hamasaki said in an interview regarding the lyrics. "So I was writing words like 'I want to show strength' and 'I want to be strong.'" The c/w song, "FRIEND," was recorded first. Says Hamasaki, "Since this song was recorded before "poker face", it really was the first song, and I had to do my best... Whenever I hear the song I remember myself from that time and I'm filled with nostalgia." Hamasaki's grandmother had been in the hospital during the time leading up to the single's recording. The day before recording, Hamasaki promised to visit her grandmother when recording was finished. However, Hamasaki recieved a fax at the studio from the nurses saying that Hamasaki's grandmother had passed away earlier that day. Ayu would later recall the event in a 2004 interview broadcast on NTV. The single reached #20 on the Oricon charts and stayed on the charts for a total of six weeks. The single sold 11,520 copies during it's first weeks on the charts, and has since sold a total of 43,140 copies. ContentsTrack Listing
