On songwriting & production, Ayu says: "This was the first time [Dai Nagao of Do As Infinity] wrote a song for me...The chorus for "TO BE" has a much "thicker" sound than my other singles until now, but I wonder if everyone noticed?" Regarding her fashion during this time: "After the song's release, since I was really into 70's-style clothes at the time, I wore bandannas on my head for alot of my TV lives." The single reached #4 on the weekly charts and stayed on the charts for a total of fifteen weeks. The single also became the the #64 single of 1999. The single sold 109,860 copies during its first weeks sales and it has since sold a total of 400,000 copies. Track Listing

ReissueThe single was reissued as a 5" CD on February 28th, 2001 (as were Ayu's other 3" singles). The tracklist was expanded by the addition of remixes from the Fly high CD single, plus a previously unreleased version of the "appears" remix from that single. The reissue reached #26 on the Oricon charts and stayed on the charts for three weeks. Tracklist

Music VideoThe PV for "TO BE" was directed by longtime collaborator Wataru Takeishi. It shows Ayu singing as seen by a little boy through a kaleidoscope. It makes use of various backgrounds, outfits, makeup, and wigs to bring as much color as possible into the world the little boy sees. At the end, the kaleidoscope lens breaks, and Ayu is seen in black and white. Assistant Producer: Kiyoshi Utsumi (prime direction) Live Performances
