The c/w song, "FRIEND," was recorded first. Says Hamasaki, "Since this song was recorded before "poker face", it really was the first song, and I had to do my best... Whenever I hear the song I remember myself from that time and I'm filled with nostalgia."

Hamasaki's grandmother had been in the hospital during the time leading up to the single's recording. The day before recording, Hamasaki promised to visit her grandmother when recording was finished. However, Hamasaki recieved a fax at the studio from the nurses saying that Hamasaki's grandmother had passed away earlier that day. Ayu would later recall the event in a 2004 interview broadcast on NTV.

"poker face" is the debut single released by Hamasaki Ayumi. The song "poker face" was used as the [[CDTV]] opening song. On her first day of recording, Ayumi's grandmother passed away (and is the reason Ayumi now dislikes the song). After hearing the recording Ayumi was displeased with the lyrics and re-wrote them. Her first draft of the song has yet to be released. The single reached #20 on the [[Oricon]] charts and stayed on the charts for a total of six weeks. The single sold 11,520 copies during it's first weeks on the charts, and has since sold a total of 43,140 copies.

The single was re-released on 2001.02.28 in a 12cm format with new remixes of the song. This time around the single reached #31 on the [[Oricon]] charts and only stayed on the charts for two weeks.
