appears is Hamasaki Ayumi's eleventh single under the avex trax label. The song was used in commercials for the AUBE Holy Crystal line of makeup. "immature" was used in commercials for JT's Momo no Tennensui drink.

The single was a limited edition release, with only 300,000 copies pressed.

The release of "appears" coincided with the release of Hamasaki's second studio album, LOVEppears. The cover art is of a "black ayu," intended as a foil to the LOVEppears cover art's "white ayu." The album & single were advertised together in posters & displays often.

"appears" reached #2 on the Oricon charts, staying there for a total of three weeks, selling 273,760 copies during it's first week and has since sold a total of 290,550 copies.
