The song was used in commercials for Focus 2-Week Disposable contact lenses, and as the ending theme for the TV show ASAYAN. "YOU" was recorded around the same time as "poker face" and "FRIEND," the tracks from her previous single. Ayu says she was trying to get the same emotions across in "YOU" as in "poker face." In her words, "With 'poker face' and this song, 'YOU', I thought I could cure someone's problems, but now I think that around this time, I was curing myself. That comes out in the lyrics - it was something I was very preoccupied with." Regarding the theme of the lyrics in both this song and "poker face", she states, "If you put glass in an important place in your home, it keeps the wind out... and although you feel very protected with that barrier there, one day... your protection will break into pieces. These two songs have this image, something so delicate, but holding an unreliable strength." The single reached #20 on the Oricon charts and it stayed on the charts for a total of ten weeks. Music Video The PV for "YOU" was directed by Wataru Takeishi. It depicts Ayu in various rooms of what's revealed later to be a large house by the ocean. Each room has a different color, and in each one something different is happening.
